Louisiana has an incredible abundance of snakes, and a few of the venomous ones are some of the most common in the state. With our abundance of wildlife and many warm days, everything a snake needs is here. There are around 50 species of snakes in Louisiana, and six of them are venomous, seven if you count the two species of coral snakes. Most snakes are not dangerous to humans, but some, like the copperhead, are among the most commonly found. Deaths from snake bites are rare, but pain, swelling, and other complications can result. Some of our snakes are small, worm like, and barely recognizable as snakes. Other snakes are very rare, secretive, or a subspecies only distinguishable from others by the trained eye. Read more
